Contact Your Lender

The very first thing you should do if you are running into difficulties paying your mortgage is to contact your lender. The sooner you make them aware of your situation, the better. Keep your lender informed and they are likely to be far more sympathetic to your case than if you simply bury your head in the sand. The only way they know whether yours is a genuine case of hardship or you simply have no intention of honouring your agreement with them, is if you tell them. There are procedures laid down by the Financial Services Authority to help you, and your lender will take your circumstances into account, but only if you inform them about your difficulties.

Seek Advice

Mortgage Debt Advice is available from many commercial and non-commercial organisations. A good starting point if you require Mortgage Debt Advice would be National Debtline who would will be able to offer you free, confidential and impartial advice.

Pay What You Can

No matter how much or how little you can afford to pay, pay something. Your mortgage lender will look far more favourably upon your situation if you at least make the effort to pay, even if it is nowhere near the right amount. It could make the difference between you keeping your home and losing it!
